Candy Nigretto: 2005 Master Mariner Award

Candy Nigretto, this year’s recipient of the 2005 Master Mariner Award, grew up in the marine industry. Her father was a naval architect in her younger years, and she experienced many aspects of the marine industry, attending ship christenings and launchings.

Later in life, Candy tried the banking industry, but found that it wasn’t that interesting.  She migrated to Tacoma Boatbuilding Company where she, her sister, Cheri Matheson, and her father, Jack Crocker, spent many years.

After 17 years at Tacoma Boat, she went to Sea-Land Service, now Horizon Lines.  There she worked as a documentation and cargo service specialist where she learned much about the shipping industry.  Currently she is working in the Finance Department for the Port of Tacoma covering yet another part of maritime commerce.

This year’s recipient is hard-charging and very forward when it comes to the Propeller Club.  She is very active in both the local and national scene.  She is currently still serving on the Board of Governors, has served as the Club President, is on several committees such as Scholarship, Past President and Chowdown (being the first and only woman chairperson on that committee) to name a few. At the national level, she serves on the National Executive Committee where she represents the Women’s Propeller Club as its President.

When it comes to the Propeller Club you only need look there for Candy because that is where she will be.  We would like to congratulate Candy Nigretto as she is honored with this award as 2005 Master Mariner, Pierce County Maritime Person of the Year, for her most generous contributions to Propeller Club.
